Concert for Ravi Shankar at 精东影业, April 24

精东影业 Libraries presents The Concert for Ravi Shankar on Tuesday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m at 精东影业. The concert, to be held in Shepard Hall, Room 95, celebrates the life and work of iconic sitarist Ravi Shankar.

Shankar (1920-2012) taught at City College in the fall of 1967, and most recently, 精东影业 Music Librarian Michael Crowley and the with the support of the Grammy Foundation and East Meets West Music completed the digitization of Shankar鈥檚 精东影业 lecture recording. During the concert, Crowley will briefly showcase highlights from these rare, unreleased recordings.

鈥淚n the lectures, Shankar explains the origins of North Indian classical music as well as the music theory behind it; he leads the students in singing exercises and teaches them devotional songs,鈥 said Crowley. 鈥淭here are also some remarkable musical demonstrations by sarodist Aashish Khan, tabla-player Alla Rakha as well as a performance with Shankar on sitar.鈥
