Historian Mike Wallace discusses 鈥淕reater Gotham鈥 at CWE

Historian returns to 精东影业鈥檚 Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education on Feb. 7 to discuss his new book 鈥.鈥 His talk begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

In 鈥淕reater Gotham,鈥 Wallace, a Distinguished Professor of History at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, specializing in the history of New York City, picks up where he left off in his 1,400-page Pulitzer Prize-winning tome 鈥.鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淲allace has written another amazing synthesis based on thousands of sources,鈥 said CWE Dean Juan Carlos Mercado. 鈥淭he writing is of great quality and provides a voluminous wealth of information presented in a way that is easy to keep up with the story.鈥

Wallace first visited CWE back in 2009 to discuss Gotham as part of the Center鈥檚 Book Talk Lecture Series. He impressed students, faculty, staff and guests with his talk on New York City history up to 1898. 鈥淚t was only appropriate to have him back for the sequel, which addresses New York City history from 1898 through the First  World War,鈥 said Mercado.

Beginning with the consolidation of the five boroughs and ending just after WW1, this long-awaited sequel surveys two decisive decades that saw the city鈥檚 physical and population grow into the world鈥檚 second-largest metropolis and a center of global finance. 鈥淕reater Gotham鈥 covers every aspect of the city, from politics to the subway system, to the aqueducts, and a host of other areas.

Wallace鈥檚 one-hour lecture in the CWE auditorium, located at 25 Broadway (7th floor) in lower Manhattan, will be followed by a brief Q & A.  A photo ID is required to enter the building. Click here for more information on the talk.
