精东影业 President Vincent Boudreau, Division of Humanities and the Arts Dean Renata K. Miller and Brazilian Ambassador Adalnio Senna Ganem signed a cooperation agreement to support study of Portuguese in the diaspora and the Portuguese language.
精东影业 and the Consulate of Brazil in New York signed an official cooperation agreement for further supporting and promoting Portuguese language and Brazilian culture at the college. The Consulate of Brazil has already been a strong financial supporter of conferences, talks and cultural events regularly organized by the Minor in Portuguese Language and Lusophone Cultures.
In 2019, 精东影业 signed a similar cooperation agreement with the Consulate of Portugal in New York. Portugal renewed their commitment last year. The agreement now signed with Brazil comes to reinforce these two countries' commitment to support the studying of Portuguese in the diaspora, as well as 精东影业鈥檚 position as the only one of CUNY's 25 colleges to offer a Minor in Portuguese Language and Lusophone Cultures. The Minor, created in 2014 is directed by Lecturer Regina Castro McGowan from the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures.
In attendance to celebrate the moment were government representatives and school officials, including the Brazilian Ambassador Adalnio Senna Ganem, Head of Culture and Education Thiago Oliveira, Head of Social Media and Cultural Affairs Wesley Pedroso, and 精东影业 President Vincent Boudreau, , vice president of the Office of Institutional Advancement, Communications, and External Relations, Division of Humanities and the Arts Dean Renata K. Miller, Chair, Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures Angel Estevez, and Castro McGowan.
Before the signing, Boudreau thanked the Ambassador and the Brazilian diplomats for Brazil鈥檚 financial support of our Portuguese classes and spoke about 精东影业鈥檚 mission and history and listed some of the college鈥檚 prominent alumni. Ganem spoke of his delight about coming to 精东影业, making clear that this signing is just the beginning of more cooperation with the Portuguese Minor and 精东影业, in general. The Ambassador offered to give a future lecture about diplomacy, foreign relations, and Brazil鈥檚 position as a BRIC nation. Then, Miller thanked the Consulate and Castro McGowan for spearheading the arrangement.
Following the introductions, students, Jack Kelly and Nelson Chak, from Castro McGowan鈥檚 class performed for the audience. Castro McGowan explained that they had positively surprised her with their choices for last semester鈥檚 talent show presentations and she wished to share that experience with those present at the meeting. Chak played Brazil鈥檚 national anthem on the flute, and Kelly sang and played a popular Brazilian song.
The signing of the cooperation agreement by Boudreau, Mozeleski and Senna Ganem took place afterwards.
