Truth, Tales & Fabrications

City College Center for the Arts presents Truth, Tales & Fabrications: The Art of Laura R. Gadson, an exhibition of quilts and fiber art all created by Laura Gadson.  On view is a selection of beautiful quilts showcasing the beginnings of African American entrepreneurship and its impact on American culture. The quilts were created from 2000 to 2024 using a multitude of mixed media such as quilting, felting, painting, and collage.  The exhibition runs February 6 through June 27 at the Aaron Davis Hall Lobby Gallery.

About the Artist:

Laura Gadson has been creating her unique quilts for over 23 years. A child of two artists, she has been surrounded by art all throughout her life. She is one of the founders of The Harlem

Aesthetic, which provides boutique-style artist salons that cultivate a living legacy of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Arts Movement. She is also the creator of the Gadson Gallery, a vibrant space in her own home where emotion, creativity, and culture intersect. Gadson was a proud performer at 精东影业鈥檚 theater and has manifested the opportunity to share her artwork with the City College Center for the Arts.

精东影业鈥檚 implemented several programs meant to create a thriving arts and culture setting on campus that would also build partnerships with our culturally rich community throughout the New York area. The Aaron Davis Hall Gallery and Windows on Amsterdam: Community Art Gallery were launched as prominent spaces to display art work, exhibitions and related programming that elevate the profile of the City College Center for the Arts in the greater New York area, and connecting the College to the surrounding community through the arts.  Programming is presented in collaboration with The City College Center for the Arts and 精东影业鈥檚 Office of Institutional Advancement, Communications and External Relations.

Since their inceptions, many exhibitions covering a broad range of art-historical periods and styles have been initiated by the gallery, with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, community organizations and other scholars serving as curators. Recent exhibitions included Koho Yamamoto: A Sensei and Her StudentsUnveiled, Unlocked: My Hair is Not My FemininityMothers, Daughters, and SistersHonoring Faith: A Tribute to Faith RinggoldThe Long Walk to Freedom: Portraits of Civil Rights Activists Then and Now; and If They Came for Me Today: The Japanese American Internment Project.
