Placement Exam

UPDATED PROCEDURES FOR PLACEMENT EXAMS:

Approval for registration in SPAN 12300 is contingent upon the completion of a preliminary questionnaire and, ultimately, a placement exam if you are contacted by the department. The deadline for students to submit the questionnaire is August 8, 2025:

After completing the questionnaire, students will either be allowed to register in SPAN 123 or will be directed to take a placement exam, which must be completed by August 18, 2025.
 

FOR THE PLACEMENT EXAM, STUDENTS HAVE THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS:

1)For the following languages (Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish), students must take the placement exam IN PERSON, on paper, in the Department NAC 5/223 (Walk-in).

2) For the following other languages (Chinese, French, Italian), students may take the placement exam either IN PERSON, on paper, in the Department NAC 5/223 (Walk-in) or on the computer, in the NAC 6/201 (registration required) according to the specific schedule below:

(For languages other than Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Japanese, Spanish) at the Testing Center (NAC 6/212) on: Tuesday March 25, 2025 at 2:00 p. m.

For German and Russian, students may only take the placement exam on the computer, in the NAC 6/201 (registration required) according to the specific schedule below:

Placement exams in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Russian, Spanish for Heritage Speakers as well as Spanish for Non-Heritage Speakers will be offered in campus there are two versions of the exam: The written Exam which can be taken Monday through Friday in the Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures Department at NAC 5/223. This test is a walk-in in test.

The second Version of the test is in person; For this exam you must pre-register for the desired session you plan to take separately Sessions for this test are once per month and have limited seating. (ie, you cannot take 2 different language exams on the same day/at the same time). 

Once you have signed up, you must take the exam at the date and time you selected; if you miss your appointment, you will have to go through the sign-up process all over again or take the written exam instead.
