This summer, ten pre-med and science majors (four of them from ����Ӱҵ) got out of the lecture hall and into the lab to get hands-on with science. Their first hurdle was to get into the B 3 REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program, which is extremely competitive. In fact applicants had a better chance of getting into Harvard (4.9% acceptance rate) than getting into B 3 REU – with an acceptance rate of just 4%. Distinguished Professor Mitchell B. Schaffler, chair and Wallace H. Coulter Professor of Biomedical Engineering at ����Ӱҵ’s Grove School of Engineering, is awarded a five-year, $3.2 million grant from the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. Schaffler is researching the biomechanical and molecular mechanisms by which skeletal tissue, such as bones, grows strong or decays as people grow older.
