Thanks to a 2016 National Endowment for the Humanities award, Václav Paris, assistant professor of English at ����Ӱҵ, is spending this semester working on a book on early 20th-century modernist prose. “Epic after Evolution: Modernism’s National Narratives,” is the title of Paris’ NEH funded project. City College of New York educator Dr. Beverly Falk is the recipient of a $475,000 grant from the Foundation for Child Development for a study aimed at benefitting pre-K children from high-need and diverse communities. Dr. Robert R. Alfano, a pioneer in ultrafast optical science and engineering, is the 2016 recipient of the Optical Society of America’s Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award. The award recognizes individuals for their innovative and influential contributions to the field of biophotonics. Melissa Julien is the latest member of ����Ӱҵ’s Branding + Integrated Communications program selected for the 4A’s elite Multicultural Advertising Internship Program. As a MAIP Fellow, she will intern this summer at DigitasLBi, a global marketing and technology agency. “James Baldwin’s America,” is the title of a reading and discussion series at ����Ӱҵ in March. It celebrates the work of the renowned writer and Harlem native. City College of New York chemistry Professor Teresa J. Bandosz’ pioneering research has earned her a 2016-2017 Fulbright Senior Scholar Award. Bandosz, who also holds a professorship in chemical engineering at City College, will travel to the University of Malaga in Spain to conduct research that could help alleviate global warming and solve energy problems. An authority on the application of adsorption to environmental problems, she will develop new catalysts based on porous carbons and special photoactive polymers. George Basaly, a senior in ����Ӱҵ’s Grove School of Engineering, is the recipient of a 2016 WISE fellowship for outstanding undergraduates. Its goal is to prepare future leaders of the engineering profession in the United States. A chemical engineering major with minors in mathematics and economics, Basaly will spend nine weeks in Washington, D.C., this summer developing a public policy sponsored by AIChE. City College of New York women's basketball head coach, Jamie Angeli, headlined the CUNYAC Basketball Awards when he earned CUNYAC Women's Coach of the Year. Tiara Brown was named to the women’s First Team, while Khalil Hamer was named to the men’s Second Team. Marissa Olsen received the Sportsmanship award. In his second year as the head coach, Angeli, has completely turned around the women's basketball program. Last season, the team was 5-21 and 3-13 in conference play. This season he has set up a team that finished the regular season 16-9, which is the most wins since the 2002-03 season
